ABOUT THIS 3D FIGURINE

Sauron, the actual Lord of the Rings, is the main antagonist of J.R.R.Tolkien’s legendarium and the evil incarnate of the Middle-earth. The titular character only got a tiny portion of screen time but easily managed to inspire with awe all fans of the fantasy universe, including one of our contributing 3D artists. The incredible project took the author around 190 hours to complete and we are honoured to welcome the very Lord of the Rings to Gambody’s category of the same name! The author of Sauron 3D figurine demonstrated painstaking attention to detail and unveiled the 3D printing project to meet the wishes of the most passionate fans of the franchise. The Dark Lord is depicted wearing his iconic suit of steel armour as if he’s just emerged on the battlefield where his forces are fighting the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. The mightiest of the Maiar has the horned helmet resting on his head and his pauldrons, cuisses and vambraces are covered with sharp spikes. There are even a fine mail and a skirt to add to the Master’s complex armour! Thanks to the effort of the 3D artist, Sauron figurine can be assembled both cloaked in its giant tattered cape or without one. Last but definitely not least, are the interchangeable gauntlets of the Sauron figurine that allow one to recreate the battle on the slopes of Mount Doom at its different stages. Your 3D printed Lord of the Rings can be displayed either wielding his formidable 6-bladed mace or demonstrating the source of his power - the One Ring. The fragments of a fierce battle added to the model’s platform confirm the enthusiasm of the 3D artist. Not to mention the intricately detailed entwining of the intaglio decoration that winds around Sauron’s armour!

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

Sauron figurine for 3D printing is a static assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 57 hours in total. The figurine’s anatomy was thoroughly reviewed during the moderation process for the Dark Lord to be depicted harmoniously in the intended pose in his complex suit of armour. The imposing figurine and its giant cape were divided into as many assembly parts as needed to fit even the smallest 3D printers' build plates and for you to nevertheless receive a towering 3D printed Sauron after assembly among your LOTR collection. The model’s cutting was chosen by our team to minimise the amount of filament needed for generated support and some of the parts were hollowed out for you to save resin in the model’s Eco version. In order to conceal the places where assembly parts of the figurine must be connected, the model was cut along the contour of his plate armour seams. For you to achieve the cleanest 3D printed result, Sauron’s spiky helm, gauntlets, pauldrons, rerebraces, individual spikes all over the suit, mace, putrefied cloak etc. are provided as separate assembly pieces. All assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. When downloading any figurine's file you will also receive "Assembly Manual" for FFF/FDM 1.0 and DLP/SLA 1.0 versions in PDF format.

The figurine is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from Sauron's actual height that is 2780 mm. The 3D printing figurine's chosen scale is 1/8 for the FFF/FDM version and 1/16 for the DLP/SLA/SLS versions.

FAQ:

Where can I print a model if I have no printer?
How to get started with 3D printing?
How to set up my 3D printer?
How to choose right 3D model print bed positioning?
How to paint printed figurine?

Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r software.

Cura printing recommendations:

These are basic settings that were tested in Cura 4.8.0 slicer.

The test models were printed on Ultimaker 2, Creality Ender 3, Creality CR-10S Pro V2, Anycubic I3 Mega, Anycubic I3 MegaS 3D printers with PLA and PETG filaments.

Disclaimer: The following printing settings are a recommendation, not an obligation. The parameters can vary depending on the peculiarities of your 3D printer, the material you use and especially the particular assembly part at hand. Each part that any model comprises often needs preliminary review and you are free to tweak the settings the way you find suitable.

Note:
- You can scale up the model (downscaling is not recommended!);
- All connectors should be printed at 100% Infill;
- For all parts of locks (“ge_lock” in “Source files”) you need to change "Brim" type to "Skirt" in Build Plate Adhesion section.
