ABOUT THIS 3D MODEL

"Number Five... is ALIVE."

Johnny 5, a.k.a. S.A.I.N.T. Number 5, is a charming robot protagonist of the ‘80s Short Circuit sci-fi films. Though initially invented as a weapon for the U.S. military, Number 5 was miraculously imbued with self-awareness and intelligence by a bolt of lightning! Having zero desire to kill, sapient Johnny 5 embarked on a discovery of the world and the humans with an unmatched thirst for "input".

Our contributing 3D artist must have rewatched the ‘80s sci-fi classics, as the 140 hours of his creative work yielded a brilliant Number 5 for 3D printing. Eager to add a touch of nostalgia to your collection, the author of the model masterly depicted his take on Johnny 5’s recognisable design. The crafty and inquisitive Number 5 model is articulated, it sports expressive eyebrows, a bandana, and can even be displayed holding a nameplate to recreate the mugshot scene from the movie’s sequel! There is no doubt that the friendly Johnny 5 will easily get along with your collection of 3D prints, so don’t hold back!

ADAPTATION FOR 3D PRINTING

Johnny 5 model for 3D printing is a highly articulated action assembly model and its moderation and adaptation for different types of 3D printers took Gambody team 46 hours in total. In order to ensure multidirectional movement of the S.A.I.N.T. robot, it was divided into many assembly parts and special mechanisms were introduced into all model’s joints to give you an opportunity to display Johnny 5 in a variety of positions and scenes, i.e. its eyes, eyelids, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, caterpillar tracks, etc. are fully articulated. Articulation of the multi-section caterpillar tracks imitates the movement of the real continuous track. The highly developed system of the model’s multi-section caterpillar tracks is equipped with a system of gears for an easy and impressive movement of the assembled robot. All assembly parts are provided in STL files in recommended positions that were worked out so to ensure the smoothness of the details’ surfaces after printing and so that the 3D printing beginners won't face difficulties when placing the parts on a build plate. We highly recommend that you watch "Assembly video" in the photo preview section before assembling Johnny 5. When downloading any model's file you will also receive "Assembly Manual" for FFF/FDM 1.0 and DLP/SLA/SLS 1.0 versions in PDF format.

The model is saved in STL files, a format supported by most 3D printers. All STL files for 3D printing have been checked in Netfabb and no errors were shown.

The model's scale was calculated from Johnny 5's actual height that is 1830 mm. The 3D printing model's chosen scale is 1:8 for FFF/FDM version and 1:16 for DLP/SLA/SLS version.

VERSION SPECIFICATIONS

N.B. Upon customers' requests, there were released FFF/FDM 1.1 and DLP/SLA/SLS 1.1 versions with enlarged caterpillar drive base (see photo preview section).

FFF/FDM 1.0, 1.1 versions features:
- Contains 135 parts;
- A printed model is 256 mm tall, 114 mm wide, 152 mm deep;

N.B. The caterpillar tracks should be printed without supports at an angle of 45º (the upper layers will print along the tracks binding them);

- Johnny 5 moves around on caterpillar tracks that are driven by a system of gears;
- The robot’s tracks can rise up and be fixed in the upright position with the help of a supporting ball-wheel;
- Johnny’s head can turn left and right, its eyes rotate, and both pairs of eyelids are articulated as well;
- Number 5's body is equipped with two pull-back spiral mechanisms that act as shock absorbers;
- The robot’s shoulder, elbow and wrist joints are articulated;
- The assembly of some parts such as the fully articulated fingers requires additional “pins”. These pins do not come in STL files but can be made out of short pieces of regular 1.75 PLA;
- Johnny 5 can be displayed with either of two left shoulder mount variants - an articulated laser weapon or a utility pack;
- The utility pack can hold an umbrella or a “magnetic grappler” that you can wrap a rope around;
- There are a removable chest panel and two variants of the head - with and without a helmet;
- The right shoulder mount is fully articulated as well;
- Tunnels throughout the robot’s body are provided for LED wiring to light up the eyes; a spot to hide the battery or a motor is provided behind the tracks;
Lenses on the robot’s eyes are provided separately and can be printed with the transparent filament;
- LED wires can act as hydraulic cables that connect Johnny 5's parts or they can also be made of 1.75mm filament;
- It is highly recommended that you watch "Assembly video" in the photo preview section and read "Assembly Manual" in PDF before assembling the Johnny 5;
- All parts are divided in such a way that you will print them with the smallest number of support structures.

DLP/SLA/SLS 1.0, 1.1 versions features:
- Contains 34 parts;
- A printed model is 131 mm tall, 55 mm wide, 76 mm deep;
- Johnny’s head can turn left and right;
- The robot’s shoulder and elbow joints are articulated;
- Johnny 5 can be displayed with either of two left shoulder mount variants - a laser weapon or a utility pack;
- The utility pack can hold a “magnetic grappler” that you can wrap a rope around;
- There are two variants of the head panel - with and without a helmet;
- It is highly recommended that you watch "Assembly video" in the photo preview section and read "Assembly Manual" in PDF before assembling the Johnny 5;
- All parts are divided in such a way to fit the build plates and to ensure that support structures are generated where needed.

Below you can find printing recommendations for CuraSimplify3D and Slic3r software.

Cura printing recommendations:

These are basic settings that were tested in Cura 4.8.0 slicer.

The test models were printed on Ultimaker 2, Creality Ender 3, Creality CR-10S Pro V2, Anycubic I3 Mega, Anycubic I3 MegaS 3D printers with PLA and PETG filaments.

Disclaimer: The following printing settings are a recommendation, not an obligation. The parameters can vary depending on the peculiarities of your 3D printer, the material you use and especially the particular assembly part at hand. Each part that any model comprises often needs preliminary review and you are free to tweak the settings the way you find suitable.

Note:
- You can scale up the model (downscaling is not recommended!);
- All connectors should be printed at 100% Infill;
- For all parts of locks (“ge_lock” in “Source files”) you need to change "Brim" type to "Skirt" in Build Plate Adhesion section.
